Futon Mattress
While futons are excellent for saving space comfort can be an issue. One of the most common complaints about futons is how uncomfortable they can quickly become. This discomfort can be avoided by making sure the piece has a good futon mattress.
Inexpensive futons will sell a thin mattress (2” to 3”) that is filled with cotton batting and is quilted. While these mattresses are light and inexpensive they are often too thin to provide support and become lumpy quickly. Lumpy mattresses are very unpleasant to sleep on.
Ideally the futon mattress should be at least six inches thick so that the frame of the futon cannot be felt underneath. Mattresses made from poly foam are comfortable and offer terrific support. Buckwheat mattresses are all natural and help regulate body temperature while sleeping. A foam and spring combination is the ultimate in comfort and support but a little heavier than the other kinds of mattresses.
