Futons FAQs
I have heard futons can be uncomfortable, is this true?
No. Uncomfortable futons are the result of a bad mattress or loose frame. The mattress should be at least six inches thick and replaced every two years or so. Frames should be tightened periodically to ensure they are not wobbly or uneven.
Are futons only temporary pieces of furniture?
Depends on the material. Lightweight aluminum frames may not last as long as a wooden or upholstered frame. A nice wooden frame or sturdy upholstered futon sofa should last at least five years. The mattress should be replaced every two years.
How do I know what kind of mattress to get for my futon?
Consider the frequency of use. If the futon will be slept on every night then a good foam or foam and spring combo mattress will be the most comfortable. If the futon will only be used occasionally then a cotton filled or buckwheat mattress will do just fine. Make sure the mattress is at least six inches thick no matter what so that the frame is not felt underneath.
